Panasonic may produce 40in OLED TV

Rumours circulating in Japan suggest that Panasonic are planning to invest heavily in OLED technology with the aim of producing a 40in OLED screen by 2011.

OLED technology is based on organic materials which emit light naturally after an electrical charge is passed through them. The result is a device which uses around 40% less power than a traditional flat panel TV and offers contrast ratios which far outreach anything current LCD or Plasma screens can offer.

According to the Japanese newspaper 'Nikkei', Panasonic are preparing to invest around £500m in a new facility to produce OLED panels.

Sony are the only manufacturer at present to offer OLED technology commercially. Their 11in XEL-1 (pictured) is a marvel of electronic engineering which uses the technology to create a svelte like screen that not only looks around 10 times sharper than LCD or Plasma but also uses far less energy. A contrast ratio of 1,000,000 to 1 far exceeds anything existing technologies can offer and video relay 1,000 times faster than LCD promises blur free fast action pictures.
