JVC has released the NX-BD3 which it claims is the first DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) enabled Blu-ray system.
DLNA is a standard for creating wired and wireless interoperable networks where digital content such as photos, music, and videos can be shared through consumer electronics (CE), personal computers (PCs), and mobile devices in and beyond the home.
Essentially, the NX-BD3 enables playback through a wireless home network with its ability to stream AVCHD (a popular camcorder format) and MPEG-2 HD content over your home network onto your TV.
The NX-BD3 is a 2.1 system, which includes two compact stereo speakers and a subwoofer. JVC has developed technology designed to create a virtual surround-sound system. Essentially by having two speaker cones with different material thicknesses some sounds can be delayed, creating a surround-sound effect.
The NX-BD3 is 1080p/24fps capable and supports v1.3 HDMI. Unfortunately there is no support for Blu-ray profile 2.0. The NX-BD3 is due to go on sale in the UK this October for around £750.
