The combination of WOWvx technology and a 3D display screen may be some way from the market but Philips' '3D on Blu-ray' concept is aiming to eventually give consumers the 3D experience with the quality of Blu-ray in their own homes.
Philips are actually calling the technology '2D-plus-depth' which can be enjoyed using stereoscopic (special glasses needed) or on auto-stereoscopic 3D displays, special glasses not required.
WOWvx technology has actually been around for a while. The depth element of the format indicates the position of every 2D image pixel on the depth axis in or out of the screen plane. WOWvx relies on incoming screen footage being coded with depth information indicating the position of each 2D image pixel.
Effectively, 9 different views emanate from the 2D-plus-Depth data. The nine different views are spatially dispersed via a microlens layer in front of the LCD panel which gives a sense of depth to the high definition picture.
