iPlayer to provide High Definition content

From next month the BBC's hugely successful video on demand service will offer High Definition programming.

During a panel discussion at the FT Digital Media and Broadcasting Conference, Jana Bennett, director of BBC Vision, revealed the plans for a dedicated HD channel on iPlayer.

The move that is likely to further ruffle ISP (Internet Service Providers) feathers who have already complained about the pressure of iPlayer downloads on internet bandwidth.

Since its launch on Christmas Day 2007, some or all of the BBC's programmes have been watched 250 million times. With HD content becoming available, iPlayer usage is likely to accelerate further.
