Samsung readies OLED TV's

Samsung have confirmed that they have 14.1in and 31in OLED TV's that are production ready. The two screens will be previewed at Display Week 2009.

The 31in OLED TV has a Full HD, 1,920 x 1,080 pixel resolution along with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a greater than 100 per cent NTSC colour gamut. The panel depth comes in at an stunning 8.9mm.

Samsung says that they have refined electro fine forming technology "Full Metal Mask" technology, which will be the key factor in enabling them to cost effectively mass produce OLED screens.

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology is based on organic materials which emit light naturally after an electrical charge is passed through them. OLED pixels generate their own light which brings a whole host of technological advantages. Every OLED prototype we have seen produces brighter, sharper images while using less power than any plasma or LCD TV.

The Korean electronics giant had previously announced that they planned to offer a commercially available large OLED screen by 2010. With this latest announcement, Samsung looks well on track to achieve their ambitions for this exciting new technology.
