2009 LCD TV sales up but revenue down

Although the number of LCD TV's sold in 2009 is projected to increase by 21% compared to last year, the total revenue from these sales is set to decrease by 6%.

LCD TV sales are expected to reach 127 million units in 2009, compared with 105 million sold in 2008. With the likes of Comet and PC World reporting a second year of loses however, the increase in unit sales is not reflected by a corresponding increase in revenue.

The increase in LCD TV unit sales is more reflective of large discounting and governmental incentives in the developing world, especially China. Prices have declined, particularly in the most important category, 32" LCD TV's, from £502 in April 2008 to £391 in April 2009.

The decline in revenue can also be attributed to the current popularity of 19" and 22" TVs as consumers replace smaller "second" TV's. There has also been a general downward trend in the cost of flat panel TV's over the past few years with greater economies of scale along with technical innovation driving prices down.

The current climate is proving tough for many consumers, but for those of you who can afford the not inconsiderable expensive of a flat screen TV, now is a great time to buy.
