With slightly better connectivity and some interesting features over its G10 siblings, the G15 adds another option within Panasonic's huge 2009 range of flat panel TV's and looks perfectly placed as a mid level performance option.
There are some subtle stylistic differences with the inclusion of a silver rather than black bezel over the G10 and the HDMI count goes up one to 4. The card slot found on the G15 can also play MPEG2 and DivX files as well as the AVCHD and JPEG stills supported by the G10.
Unlike the G10, the G15's ethernet port makes this series DLNA-capable and can support Panasonic's VieraCast online service.
Along with the Z1 and V10 series, 'Viera Cast' technology allows users to access online content through their TVs. Content comes from media partners such as Bloomberg, YouTube, EuroSport and Picasa Web Albums. Content is streamed over a home network via Ethernet.
Like many Plasma and LCD's in the 2009 Panasonic line up there is a built-in Freesat tuner and the intriguing 600Hz 'Smooth Motion' . 'Smooth Motion' increases the rate at which the plasma pixels refresh to improve High Definition motion tracking. It is worth noting that the figure is not directly comparable to an LCD refresh rate.
Remembering that a video signal is actually a series of still images (frames) appearing so quickly that they trick the eye into believing we are watching a moving image (100Hz = 100 frames per second) - 600Hz technology adds an extra step to the process - a method used to display (or 'flash') the individual image elements (dots) on a plasma panel, 600 times per second (600Hz). Panasonic are actually employing some clever technology to 'interpolate' this extra data. The number of frames displayed per second in the case of Sub-Field technology has not actually increased to 600, which is a little confusing.
The G15 features new NeoPDP panels which bring with them the promise of not only far greater energy efficiency but also a vastly improved picture performance. A faster 0.001ms response time, improved colour reproduction, and greater contrast levels offer the potential for stunning picture performance
The G15 line is available in 42in (TX-P42G15), and 46in (TX-P46G15) sizes.
