Planning to take the wind out of the sales of those manufacturers who have been promising OLED TV's for some time, LG are introducing a 15in OLED TV at this years IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin (September 4-9).
Although LG's new screen is not a great deal bigger than Sony's existing 11in XEL-1 OLED TV, it is a much more 'watchable' surface area and it is significant in that it is the first flat panel TV of this kind for around two years.
With an innovative and appealing design, LG's 15in OLED TV separates the screen from the tuner components while both remain part of the same unit; creating that ultra svelte like profile we have come to expect from the technology. The whole unit also folds flat to make it easy to wall mount the screen.
According to the news agency Reuters, an LG exec has indicated that it will not be too long before LG release a much bigger screen. "We are planning to unveil a 40-inch grade (OLED) product in a not too distant future," he told the newswire.
Although we have not been able to get hold of any pricing details, LG's 15in OLED is rumored to be coming in at a good deal less than Sony's £3,489 XEL-1. LG see the OLED TV business as core to their long term plans rather than the 'proof of concept' approach some commentators believe Sony has adopted.
