Once again stimulating much interest in the technology, the Korean manufacture LG have announced a timetable for the introduction of OLED TV's, with a 15in screen with us by the end of 2009.
The 15in OLED TV comes with a 1,366 x 768 (105ppi) resolution. There is maximum screen luminance with an all-white signal and an all-black signal of 200cd/m2 and 0.01cd/m2, respectively. The peak luminance is 450cd/m2.
Having introduced the 15in OLED panel in 2009, LG plans to release a 20in OLED TV in 2010, a 30in panel in 2011 and a 40in screen by 2012.
LG Display's OLED sales and marketing VP, Won Kim, said that: "Forty inch and larger OLED panels will be fairly expensive in 2012, but they will be available in the market,". He went on to indicate that LG were making inroads into significantly driving down the cost of OLED production with the aim of reaching price equanimity with LCD by 2016.
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology is based on organic materials which emit light naturally after an electrical charge is passed through them. OLED pixels generate their own light which brings a whole host of technological advantages. Every OLED prototype we have seen produces brighter, sharper images while using less power than any plasma or LCD TV.
