LG are aiming to sell 7.5m LED TV's in 2010
Tuesday, 25 November 2009 09:25 UK

Signalling their intention not to let Samsung have it all their own way , Korean electronics giant LG are aiming to sell 7.5m LED TV's in 2010, up from 400,000 this year.

Although LG have only just started to import LED TV's into the UK, elsewhere their presence is more established; in Taiwan for example, they sold out their whole LED TV inventory early Autumn.

LG are planning to launch more LED backlit LCD models in 2010, including two direct-type backlighting lines and two to three edge-type backlighting lines, with screen sizes ranging from 32in to 60in.

In the UK, LG have recently introduced an alternative to Samsung's ultra slim LED TV's with their equally svelte SL9000 series. While the technology is the less sophisticated 'edge-based' implementation of LED backlighting, it allows LG to produce much more competitively priced screens for greater market penetration.

LG's optimism to achieve 7.5m LED TV sales is also based partly on the convergence of production costs in comparison to conventional LCD's as led TV get bigger. The price gap between its conventional 42in LCD TV's and LED is about 40%, but drops to 20% for 55in models. LG see a proportion of LED TV sales coming from simple substitution of technology.

This is not to say that consumers are unwilling to pay a premium for LED technology. With the introduction of affordable LED backlit LCD TV's, Samsung have stolen a march on the competition. Figures from US market research group NPD indicate that Samsung captured around 95% of the LED TV market for the first six months of 2009; they are on course to sell around 1m LED TV's this year and aim to sell 10m in 2010. As with other manufacturers, LG are desperate not to be left behind.
