Fearing that the hype surrounding 3D TV for the home has grown beyond the expectations of even an enthusiastic marketing department, Sony Electronics' chief marketing officer Mike Fasulo has dampened expectations for the tech in 2010.
While the likes of Panasonic and Sony are forging ahead with a range of 3D enabled consumer products, the message seems to be that the experience will not become mainstream for a few years yet and that we shouldn't expect too much.
With a resurgence of 3D at the Cinema using technology far removed from the last wave of films using the technology, the danger is that consumer expectations are growing out of all proportion. While the products for 3D in the home are becoming available, they are not as sophisticated as the technology delivering 3D movies in your local cinema.
While a number of the big manufacturers will introduce products in 2010 for a home 3D experience, the amount and quality of 3D content that will become available is less certain. Sky are introducing a pay per view 3D channel in 2010, but it is not clear at the moment how broad the content on offer will be.
With a 3D standard recently established for Blu-ray, we can expect 3D material to become available via High Definition disc. Again, it is unclear just how much content will become available and how the 3D experience translates into the home environment.
Perhaps fearing a backlash from consumers expecting too much from 3D, the message seems to be that the technology is coming, but it might be a few years before it becomes established as a mainstream medium for home entertainment.
