Toshiba transform LED TV to media hub via Cell technology
Wednesday, 13 January 2010 08:40 UK

Offering a lot more power than your average PC, Toshiba's 'CELL' processor takes the core processing platform from the Sony PS3 to create an exciting new development in TV technology.

As the co-creator of PS3 'Cell' technology, Toshiba has been promising its integration into other products for some time now. 2010 will see the powerful processing technology's integration into Toshiba LED TV's beginning with the ultra high end ZX900.

With built-in wireless, Toshiba's ZX900 can serve media files to other devices on a home network, as well as display and play them back itself. An integrated Blu-ray allows you to copy unprotected files from BD and DVD discs to the hard drive. You can also stream content from PCs via DLNA.

A 3TB hard drive (housed in a separate black box) two terabytes of which will be dedicated to time shift functionality along with the processing power to record 8 channels simultaneously gives us some indication of the Cell TV's capabilities.

Toshiba's Cell TV introduces 'Tri-Vector' 2D to 3D real-time conversion, which employs proprietary software to analyse the 2D frames and predict the depth of field in each frame. Active shutter glasses are used to view the 3D effect which, at a recent demo, proved remarkably effective.

Advanced LED technology in the shape of 'KIRA2 Super Local Dimming LED Display', with 512 controllable zones, gives the Cell TV's a claimed 1,000 cd/m2 brightness; and 9m:1 contrast.

With the processing power to operate as a more than capable home entertainment hub and much more besides, Toshiba's ZX900 is sure to be one of the most talked about TV's of 2010.
