Promising to deliver consecutively projected right eye and left eye images in Full HD resolution, Sony have unveiled their flagship 60in LX903 LCD TV with integrated 3D and LED backlighting.
While you will still require Active Shutter glasses to enjoy the experience, they are a million miles away from those red and blue cardboard specs we had to endure along with the first 3D movies at our local cinema.
Anyone who gets their hands on the leviathan 60in LCD will be able to enjoy the 3D experience straight away with a 3D Blu-ray disc or by hooking up Sony's PS3 games consoles.
Sony's 'Internet Video' function enables the LX903 to access on line content via built-in Wi-fi. Having just announced that they will be including 'LOVEFiLM' streaming as part of the service, a raft of similar services are promised. Although Sony have not gone as far as Samsung buy announcing iPlayer integration into their TV's they are also promising a form of catch up TV.
Sony are also on the widget trail, which allows you to download 'mini' applications developed by hundreds of independent developers through the Yahoo widget platform. There are already widgets to access Amazon, eBay, Facebook, Netflix, Twitter and YouTube, to name just a few.
Elsewhere, the LX903 has 200Hz processing, Bravia Engine 3 picture processing, Edge based LED backlighting along with 4 HDMI inputs.
Using something Sony are calling 'Intelligent Presence Sensor', the LX903 employs face recognition technology to understand who is watching the screen. Sony claim that it will dim the picture or turn it off if no-one is looking, tell the kids they’re too close to the screen and optimise viewing when you’re sitting at an angle to the TV. It will even determine your viewing habits and recommend programmes you might like to watch.
The LX903 is Freeview HD ready, which means that you will be able to watch terrestrial High Definition when it arrives this year, directly through the TV.
We will post more details of Sony's LX903, including price and UK release date, when they become available.
