With the more sophisticated implementation of LED backlight technology, 'local dimming', Toshiba's SV685 series LCD TV's are now available in the UK.

Hundreds of 'white light' clusters on the SV685 create LED zones, which can be controlled individually to produce a far more precise control of on screen brightness; with a corresponding increase in contrast levels.

Toshiba's Resolution+ (formerly Super Resolution Technology) also makes an appearance on Toshiba's new LED TV's. The system has been designed to boost the quality of Standard Definition sources to something approaching High Definition quality.

Sure to become a standard feature of high end flat panel TV's, Toshiba's implementation of 200Hz processing comes in the shape of 'Active Vision M200'.

As with all technologies that increase the number of frames displayed per second, Toshiba's increase from the standard 50Hz (50 frames per second) is achieved with some clever electronic interpolation. Active Vision uses advanced algorithms to 'estimate' the detail of the extra frames, inserting them between the 'real' ones.

Early indications suggest that the SV685 is capable of producing stunning levels of contrast with deep rich inky blacks across both Standard and High Definition material.

There have been no reported issues with backlight uniformity while colours are some of the most vibrant and realistic around. Active Vision seems to do a good job in smoothing out fast motion sequences although the 'processed' look in some situation won't suit everyone.

Receiving a mixed response, Resolution + seems to be dividing opinion among Toshiba owners and commentators. Some consider the results of tinkering with the incoming SD source to this extent produces unnatural results. Others rave about the abilities of Resolution + and it is just one of those things you have to experience for yourself.

Available in 46in and a leviathan 55in screen size, Toshiba's SV685 LED backlight LCD TV's are available in the UK now.
