With plans to revamp their movie back catalog for the digital 3D era, Sony's ambitions in this direction look far beyond the release of recent 'made for 3D' theatrical film titles.
While the likes of Pixar's 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs' and 'Monsters vs Aliens' are prime candidates for the 3D Blu-ray treatment, we are also likely to see some old favorites given a new lease of life via the new format.
Sony have indicated that the likes of Ghostbusters, Starship Troopers, Zombieland, Cliffhanger, Universal Soldier, District 9, Resident Evil and Hancock will all get the 3D treatment in the near future.
Deputy general manager for Sony's 3D strategy unit, Joe Nakata, has confirmed that Sony will apply a new 3D conversion to older catalog films; for general release early in 2011.
Part of a much wider strategy, the conversion of back catalogue films to the new format is a small part of the 3D jigsaw which will see a whole raft of new products from Sony. 3D enabled TV's, Blu-ray players, and laptops amongst other products will break cover in 2010.
Realising that a broad range of 3D material is as important to the success of the new format as the hardware, Sony are also in negotiation with Imax and Discovery Communications to establish a dedicated 3D TV network in 2011.
